Veria's Summer FEstival
Beat the scorching heat!
To welcome the change in weather, people normally go down to the beaches to cool down from the heat, or alternatively go on vacations to tropical locations to soak up some local color. Now that the days are getting longer (and the nights are becoming shorter), accompanied with the balmy changes in the weather, its inevitable: this heat can make anyone wish they were somewhere out there, relaxing under the shade of a cool umbrella while drinking a tropical fruit shake, admiring the splendid beach view…
Of course, Veria itself has its share of wonderful beach locations; and majority of them are flocked by both tourists and locals alike; for a way to escape the torrential heat that the season brings along with it. But of course, some people want to have a good show, and to celebrate anything and everything that is Summer itself!
Enter the Dog Days
Giving a little history to the phrase itself, the “dog days” are commonly used to describe the hottest days of summer during the season; which is tied to what is known as the Dog Star, Sirius.
In the ancient period of what would eventually come to be known as the Veria region, early farmers would keep track of how much sunny weather they would be experiencing, and have noticed that over generations that a certain point in the season would register as the hottest, sultriest days on record.
Thanks to these ancient farmers keeping records of this important information—eventually aided by the advances in science and technology—the term itself has persisted up until the present day. Once the “dog days” come around, the beaches become even more crowded than usual; and workers out in the farmlands of Alterna, as well as several other places in the region know that the time has come for the summer harvest.
Contest Theme!
Now that locals and tourists alike are hitting the beach in order to unwind, relax and just basically cool down; the area just beyond Pahala City has been chosen to host the second contest in the Veria region! With its white sand and surf, the venue chosen embodies the feel of the summer vibes—dominated by a view of the fantastic beaches, along with the conch shell-shaped city in the distance.
The theme this time around is Summer Lovin’, because what’s not to love about the season? Ice-cream stands; bonfires at the beach; picnic parties accompanied by Pokémon companions—bonus points will be awarded if one uses a Water-type or references the theme itself in one of its many forms.
The Contest proper itself will be divided into three segments, starting on June 8 with the following schedule:
• Appeals Round: June 8 - June 15
• Battle Round: June 16 - June 23
• Performance Round: June 24 - July 1
Winners will be announced the following day, July 2; and prizes will be awarded by then!
Please keep in mind that the rounds themselves will only last within the time limits given—Contest Judges will score all material made during the duration of the round. For more information on Coordinating Contests and their respective rounds, please refer to Horizons’ Coordinator’s Guide.
